JS Bamrah FRCPsych CBE
Prof JS Bamrah is a senior consultant psychiatrist at the Greater Manchester Mental Health Trust and an Honorary Reader at University of Manchester. He is the National Chairman of British Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (BAPIO) and a trustee of two charitable organisations – LMCP charity for
disadvantaged people from the South Asian community and the African and Caribbean Mental Health Services. JS is a member of the Synergi Collaborative Centre’s Advisory Board, a national initiative to reframe, rethink and transform the realities of ethnic inequalities in severe mental illness. He is Deputy Chairman of the Board of Science, BMA.

He holds a Directorship with Apperta Foundation, a clinically-led, not-for-profit organisation supported by NHS England. JS is the inventor of the smartphone app Chart my health’ which is currently undergoing development with his partners Janssen Pharmaceuticals, NHS Digital, and Rethink following a generous grant from Janssen Pharmaceuticals. He is part of a two year Health Education England-West Bengal project which aims to transform how mental health nursing care is delivered in the key institutes in Kolkata. In 2020 he was appointed member of an Advisory Board member of ICMR-Centre for Innovation and Bio-Design (CIBioD), by the Govt. of India.

Academic achievements:

Prof Bamrah has served on two international editorial boards, two national editorial boards, and published around 40 medical publications, many as first author. He has nearly 100 publications in the tabloid press, co-authored an influential RCPsych Council report, written 3 book chapters, and edited the short story ‘Taxing the Heart’. During his research active stages he conducted or participated in several research studies, ranging from random control trials, to psychosocial treatments and one major epidemiological study which he first-authored. He lectures nationally and internationally on a range of topics, to lay and health audiences. He does a regular webcast lecture for UNESCO, which is transmitted across several countries.

He is Visiting Professor at the Punjab Nursing College, Bhatinda; Visiting Professor at the Institute of Psychiatry, Kolkata; Visiting Professor, Adesh University, Haryana; and Visiting Professor, SGRD Health Sciences University, Amritsar.

Previous key roles:
He is past Medical Director of Manchester Mental Health and Social Care Trust and past Executive Director of the Manchester Academic Health Science Centre. He has served three years as a Board member of Tameside and Glossop CCG. He is former Director and former Council member of the BMA, the inaugural Chairman of the BMA’s English Regional Councils, and the inaugural Chairman of a reformed BMA NW Regional Council.

JS is past Council member and immediate past Director of CPD of Royal College of Psychiatrists. He masterminded the electronic CPD submission system for the RCPsych which remains in popular use. He is past President of the Section of Psychiatry, Manchester Medical Society and past Chair of BMA’s Psychiatric committee.

Awards:
He is featured in Marquis’ Who’s Who, and in 2001 was invited by the PM, the Rt Hon Tony Blair, to 10 Downing Street for being one of 100 doctors who had provided a ‘Distinguished service to the NHS’. He has a Lifetime Achievement award for services toward mental health in Manchester (2010), Association Medal from the BMA (2010), Professional Excellence Award from Asianlite (2013), HSJ award for being one of 100 Black and Ethnic Minority Pioneer Health Leaders in the UK (2014), IGPI Excellence award (2019), BIPA Mental Health Champion award (2019) and other awards. In 2017 he was awarded the Fellowship of the International Institute of Organisational Psychological Medicine, UNESCO and a CBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list in 2018 for services to mental health, diversity and the NHS.
